Transformation programmes and their constituent parts are extremely hard: there are so many aspects of them that have to be got right in order for the programme ultimately to come together successfully.
This applies to start-up activities such as identification of business requirements, the choice of delivery partners, software selection, and so on. It applies to the more technical aspects of the initiative such as structuring the development activity, establishing and then implementing a robust test strategy, managing the various development and test environments required to support the programme, data conversion, and working through the complexities of the integration of the different systems involved in the solution.
Likewise it applies to the business change activities, including process mapping (‘As Is’ and ‘To Be’), defining the roles and responsibilities required for the new solution, business acceptance testing, familiarisation and training, and benefits identification and realisation. And it applies to all the other activities needed as part of sound programme management, such as stakeholder engagement, ongoing progress monitoring, risks and issues management, and addressing dependencies and contentions between different elements of the programme, or between the programme and other activities external to it.
